EUK-134™ is a mimetic of superoxide dismutase and catalase, forming an exceptionally rare self-regenerating molecule that scavenges superoxide free radicals, eliminates hydrogen peroxide and converts reactive oxygen species into water and oxygen.
According to the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, EUK-134 not only prevents damage done by exposure to the sun's harmful UVB rays, but can also increase cell survival after the exposure occurs. It is therefore a complete antioxidant system that mimics nature and is safe and beneficial in cosmetics and, more importantly, sunscreens. UVB-generated oxidative stress contributes to photoaging and photocarcinogenesis, and increased oxidative stress may lead to increased DNA damage, subsequent mutation, and in the long run, cancer. By replenishing the cell's antioxidant defense, EUK-134 may be very efficient in the fight against both the short and the long-term photoaging and photocarcinogenesis from UVB radiation on the skin. No warnings or side effects were found in researching Ethylbisiminomethylguaiacol Manganese Chloride. On the contrary, the only side effects mentioned were the benefits of Ethylbisiminomethylguaiacol Manganese Chloride (or EUK-134) on fetuses that may suffer from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Ultimately, "concurrent maternal treatment with ethanol and EUK-134, an agent that has both superoxide dismutase and catalase-like activity, resulted in less cell death and a significant reduction in major mal-formations in near term fetuses."
